WELCOME BACK

Its great to be back and spring is on the way. This term our theme is financial literacy. We have already started with a Mahana School take on the ‘Apprentice’ and we will be enjoying hearing some business people from our community speak today and tomorrow. Remember that we always welcome your input and support, and if you have any queries or concerns come in and ask. Learning is a home / school partnership.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

This term we will be learning about budgeting, product design and creation, saving, marketing and advertising, and money. All our students will be involved with making a product or providing a service that others will buy. The first phase will involve using ‘Mahana Money’ from the ‘Mahana Bank’ to build a small business. This will lead up to a ‘Mini Market Day’ this term. The second phase will involve modifying or changing the product or service to exchange for real money at the school gala next term. Parents and friends are welcome to offer ideas and help, and will be asked to provide bits and bobs that will be handy for kids to use when they have decided on their business plan.

SPEAKERS

To give the kids an idea of the ‘real world’ do we have asked some local identities to come and speak about what they do for a living. Today we have Katie Gold, artist, Steve Cartwright, entrepreneur, and Braden Field, orchardist. Tomorrow we have Mark and Anne Lane, fencing and gate specialists, Dan Reed, realtor, and Paul Searle, teacher, businessman, and raconteur. Next week we hope to have Scott Ingram, who is the commercial manager for Woollaston Vineyards. We want to say a big thanks to all of these people for giving up their time to help give the kids a better understanding of the many and varied activities going on around us. If you would like to come in and contribute some of your own experiences and knowledge, please ring the school or let us know.

GLYN LEWIS-JONES

Glyn is a financial planning advisor who has offered to come and talk to the students and parents on Wednesday 4th August at 1.30pm. He is very entertaining and will take the kids into the basic concepts of money and finance. Parents are invited to this talk that will be followed by a cup of tea and a chance to chat. Attending parents please bring some food to share. You can check out Glyn at www.findoutfirst.co.nz

MAORI LANGUAGE WEEK

This is next week. We plan to do some activities each day to celebrate. You can have a go at home by going to http://www.koreromaori.co.nz/ and trying the activities there.

SCHOOL BANKING

School Banking will continue in the office every Thursday between 8.30am and 9am.

Week 2 and 3 the National Bank will have a representative (Brigitta) here available to open accounts and answer your questions about the School Plus account and School Banking programme. If you are unable to be at the school on a Thursday a School Banking information and opening pack is available from Jenny in the office.

Banking Competition!!!

For term 3 the National Bank will run a competition (commencing week 3) and there will be rewards for children who bank regularly.

It is more important to bank regularly and create a savings habit than the actual amount of the deposit.

If you haven't banked for a while and can't find your book please let Brigitta know or phone 5438250.
